Is Van Mold Making You Sick? What a New CDC Study Means for Vanlifers Over 45

Mold in a van is a real air-quality problem, and for older travelers it carries more weight than most build blogs admit. A new CDC study found that invasive mold infections send thousands of people to the hospital every year, and the people who get seriously ill are overwhelmingly older adults and those with weakened immune systems. You can't prevent mold with a checklist, but you can build in a way that stops it from taking hold in the first place.
Let me explain what the research actually says, because the honest version matters more than the scary one.
What the study found
In July 2026, the CDC published the first U.S. study of its kind on invasive mold disease. Researchers looked at four Atlanta-area hospitals over five years and found about 450 cases. Roughly a third of those patients died in the hospital. Earlier CDC work estimated more than 15,000 hospitalizations a year could be tied to invasive mold disease nationwide.
I won't overstate this. The people who got seriously ill were mostly already vulnerable. Most had impaired immune systems, and a number were weakened after COVID. As the study's senior author put it, the concern is growing partly because there's a growing population of older people more susceptible to these illnesses. A healthy 55-year-old breathing a little cabin condensation is not the person in that dataset.
So why write about it at all? Because the people reading this aren't 28. Plenty of you are in your 50s, 60s and 70s, and some of you are managing conditions that put you closer to that dataset than you'd like. If your immune system is compromised for any reason, the math on van mold is different than it is for the person whose build video you watched last night. Nobody making those videos is going to say so.
Why a van is a mold machine
A van is a small metal box, and metal is the problem. The mechanism is simple.
Warm, humid air inside the van drifts toward the cold exterior walls. When it hits bare steel, the moisture condenses into actual water, the same way a cold glass sweats on a summer day. In a van, that water forms behind your finished walls, where you can't see it. Trapped in a dark cavity against organic material, it becomes a place mold grows.
And you generate a surprising amount of moisture just by living. Breathing overnight, cooking a meal, running certain heaters. All of it puts water into the air of a space smaller than most bathrooms. Without a way for that moist air to get out, humidity climbs and stays elevated.
I want to be fair about this: it isn't a DIY problem. Plenty of people build their own vans and plan for moisture beautifully. They seal their wood, choose the right insulation, and ventilate properly. The real divide isn't DIY versus professional builds. It's whether the build accounts for moisture at all. And most people never think about it. It's not in the pretty part of a build video, so it doesn't cross your mind until you smell it.
When moisture does get overlooked, it usually shows up in a few predictable places:
Absorbent organic materials. Raw plywood, particleboard, and residential fiberglass insulation all soak up moisture and feed mold.
Missing vapor management. Bare metal left exposed, or no real plan for where condensation goes.
Weak ventilation. No dedicated way to pull damp air out before it hits cold surfaces.
Solid mattress platforms. A mattress flat on a plywood base traps body heat and sweat underneath, where you'll never look until it's a problem.
None of that shows up when the build is finished and photographed. It shows up months later, in the air you're sleeping in.
What actually protects you
There are four categories that matter, and I want to name them clearly so you know what to look for. The detailed how-to — the humidity targets, the seasonal moisture-management routine, the step-by-step prevention protocol — lives in my Van Life Foundations Manual, because it's more than a blog post can responsibly cover. But here's the gist of it:
Non-absorbent materials. Insulation and structural materials that don't soak up moisture and don't feed mold.
Sealed wood. Any wood in the build sealed so it can't absorb moisture through its surface or its raw cut edges.
Real airflow. Active ventilation that moves damp air out, plus airflow under the mattress, not just around the cabin.
Keeping warm surfaces off cold metal. Enough insulation that interior surfaces stay above the temperature where condensation forms.

The path I took
I'm not a carpenter, and I didn't want to spend months researching hydrophobic insulation and testing wood sealers to get this right. When I chose a conversion kit for my minivan, air quality and moisture control were near the top of my list.

A kit doesn't excuse you from ventilation and habits. Nothing does. But it takes the biggest moisture traps off the table before you ever hit the road.
Where to start
If you're building a van right now, do this simple test first: on a cold morning, check the walls and under the mattress for moisture. Condensation you can see is condensation that's also forming where you can't.
