Beyond the Bucket List: How to Create a Van Life 'Intention List'

When you first start dreaming of van life, one of the most exciting steps is the "bucket list." It’s a vision of all the national parks, scenic drives, and mountaintops you’ll finally have the freedom to see.

But let’s be honest: that list can also get overwhelming. Fast.

It can quickly turn into a source of pressure—a long, expensive checklist of "must-do" items that feels more like a race than the simple, flexible life you’re actually craving.

As a relatable guide for this lifestyle, I’m here to tell you there’s a better way. I call it the 'Intention List.'

The difference is simple but powerful. A bucket list is about what you’ll do. An intention list is about how you want to live. It’s a practical tool I use with my clients to help them eliminate overwhelm and plan a journey that’s joyful, grounded, and 100% theirs.

Why an 'Intention List' is a More Practical Tool

Your journey to van life is a chance for personal growth and self-discovery. It’s about building a life, not just taking a trip. An 'Intention List' is the perfect tool for this because it helps you build your confidence with a practical, real-life plan.

  • A bucket list is a checklist of destinations. It’s easy to feel like you’ve "failed" if you don’t check them all off.

  • An 'Intention List' is a guide for living. It focuses on how you want to feel—such as confident, free, simple, or connected—and then helps you find experiences that align with those values.

This simple shift turns a big, scary dream into a series of confident, actionable steps. It’s the very first step in building a resilient, intentional, on-the-road lifestyle.

How to Create Your Van Life 'Intention List'

Ready to try it? My approach is all about step-by-step guidance. Find a quiet moment, grab a special notebook, and let's get clear on your vision.

Step 1: Start with Your 'Why' (Not Just the 'Where')

This is the "Mindset & Vision" work we cover in my From Dream to Drive blueprint. Before you list a single park, get clear on your personal 'why.' These prompts can help:

  • What experiences have you always dreamed of but put on hold?

  • What new skills do you want to learn to feel confident on the road? (e.g., solo hiking, changing a tire, finding a great boondocking spot)

  • How do you want to feel in your new lifestyle? (e.g., peaceful, adventurous, connected, simple)

Step 2: Make it Practical and Actionable

This isn't about "impossible dreams"; it's about confident action. This is where we get practical. For your top 3-5 intentions, make a real, step-by-step plan.

  • What are the actual, small steps you need to take to make it happen?

  • What are the potential costs or resources involved?

  • What's one small thing you can do this month to move toward it?

This practical approach is what eliminates the overwhelm.

Step 3: Focus on Your Actions, Not Vague Outcomes

This is the most important part of building mastery and confidence. Instead of a goal like "be happy," make it something you can actively do.

This turns a vague wish into a real-life, adaptable solution.

  • Instead of: "Be more adventurous."

  • Try: "Confidently plan and take my first solo weekend trial trip."

  • Instead of: "Be healthy on the road."

  • Try: "Find and cook one new, road-friendly recipe each week."

Your List is a Guide, Not a Test

Here’s the best part: your 'Intention List' is yours. It’s meant to be a source of encouragement, not pressure.

Your list will grow and adapt as you do (one of my favorite core values! ). The most valuable part of this process is simply getting clear on your personal values and priorities.

That clarity is the achievement. It's the foundation for your simple, confident, and joyful reality.
